OVERSOUL: Stress Testing Results

I know it's been a while since my last update but I assure you I have been busy developing as much content possible for you all on Oversoul. This post will be extra large to get you all up to speed on our progress.

Yesterday and today, Warlic opened up a private Stress Test for Oversoul to Artix Master Accounts with upgrades. This was only a Stress Test to see how stable the game is. This was NOT the alpha test. I know, I know! Summer time is pretty much over and the game isn't released yet. I promise you, we are working as fast as we can. Now that my time isn't split between AQW and OS I can focus purely on Oversoul.

Yes, poison is overpowered and will be balanced but remember this is still in the test phase. Important things like stats haven't been implemented. Stats will determine your HP, Damage, Initiative, Critical Strike%, and Blocking%. Depending on your class and stats each character will be different... not to mentions card decks, relics, elements and wild cards.

In summary, Warlic told me the the Stress test was a huge success and things are moving forward really well. :::) The feed back has been overwhelmingly positive on the available gameplay.

It's not a simple game to pick up but thanks to some players I can link you to some quick overviews on the game mechanics which should help new players learn some basics. Here's an Oversoul Video Overview by Zereldo:

 

I found this is a post from the Oversoul Forum Moderator drDOT which will be quite useful to first time players:

To test it when the servers are up, you have to log in with a Master Account containing at least one upgraded account in any of the games.
The first time you log in you are given the option to pick from 5 characters. As of now the characters and their abilities are these:



Barbarian: Ice-based character of a very defensive approach. The cards available for this character are the following:
·  ·  Cards of 1 damage for 1 energy cost
·  Cards of 1 unblockable damage for 2 energy cost
·  Cards of 2 damage for 2 energy cost
·  Cards of 5 damage for 4 energy cost
·  Cards of 5 shields for 3 energy cost
·  Special Cards with stunning ability (Freeze) for 5 energy cost
·  Special Cards that turn the offensive cards into shield cards for 6 energy cost (not applicable on unblockable cards)

Young Paladin: Light-based character with healing and extra damage special cards. The cards available for this character are the following:
·  Cards of 1 damage for 1 energy cost
·  Cards of 1 unblockable damage for 2 energy cost
·  Cards of 2 damage for 2 energy cost
·  Cards of 5 damage for 4 energy cost
·  Cards of 5 shields for 3 energy cost
·  Special Cards of 3 healing power for 3 energy cost
·  Special Cards of +3 damage bonus for 2 energy cost (not applicable on unblockable cards)

Void Knight: Darkness-based character with poisonous ability and bonus damage. The cards available for this character are the following:
·  Cards of 1 damage for 1 energy cost
·  Cards of 1 unblockable damage for 2 energy cost
·  Cards of 2 damage for 2 energy cost
·  Cards of 5 damage for 4 energy cost
·  Cards of 5 shields for 3 energy cost
·  Special Cards of +3 damage bonus at 1 discard cost (not applicable on unblockable cards)
·  Special Cards with poisonous ability (Damage over Time) for 5 energy cost (the DoT damage goes through shields and sums up to 12 damage over 3 turns)

Fire Witch: Fire-based character with very powerful offensive cards. The cards available for this character are the following:
·  Cards of 1 damage for 1 energy cost
·  Cards of 1 unblockable damage for 2 energy cost
·  Cards of 2 damage for 2 energy cost
·  Cards of 5 damage for 4 energy cost
·  Cards of 5 shields for 3 energy cost
·  Special Cards of 3 unblockable damage for 4 energy cost
·  Special Cards of 10 damage for 5 energy cost

Lighting Wolf: Energy-based character with bonus damage special cards. The cards available for this character are the following:
·  Cards of 1 damage for 1 energy cost
·  Cards of 1 unblockable damage for 2 energy cost
·  Cards of 2 damage for 2 energy cost
·  Cards of 5 damage for 4 energy cost
·  Cards of 5 shields for 3 energy cost
·  Special Cards of +3 damage bonus with no energy cost (not applicable on unblockable cards)
·  Special Cards of +1 damage bonus for all the cards used with it for 4 energy cost (not applicable on unblockable cards)



As soon as you made your character, you appear in the only available town as of now. Further on you are able to possess the other 4 characters you didn't pick.
In the main town you are given some options of interaction.
·  Chatting: As expected from a MMO, you are able to chat with other players by typing in the box on the bottom left part of the screen. Chatting, though, is not available during fights or map traveling.
·  Battle:
+ Random PvP: The button triggers a queue until the server assigns an enemy for you.
+ PvE: By pressing this button you trigger a fight with an AI character, those being able to be possessed.
·  Map: As of now, the map is only useful to possess more characters. Using the "Battle" button on the map will most likely get you in a fight with a Young Knight. In order to fight against the other 4 characters use the Explore button available there over certain areas of the map.
·  Characters: As soon as you have more characters possessed, use this tab to change between them before a fight.
·  Elements: This button pops up a list of elements and their respective effectiveness.
·  Cards: This tab brings up an inventory of your cards. You can not change anything in the deck right now, just have a preview over your abilities.



<<Combat System>>

The combat system is a turn-based card strategy system. Each card got its' own energy cost that you have to fulfill before using it.
In order to have enough energy, you have to press the elemental-icons at the bottom of the combat screen to charge them. Each charging will waste on of your turns. If you charge your energy in a row, more energy will be added each turn starting from 2 in the first one and increasing the amount by 1 for each successful charging chain. Therefore 3 turns of consecutive charging will recharge 2, 3 then 4 energy.
To use your cards you have to click them during your turn to put them in the queue to the right. As soon as you have them ordered the way you want, press End Turn and they will be used.
The player that gets the enemy to 0 health wins. Make sure to use your shield cards in order to protect your health.

<<Possession System>>
As explained before, in order to possess a new character, you have to encounter it via the Explore button on the Map. Right now the odds to successfully posses a character are 100%, you will just have to win the fight and a tab will pop up asking if you want to possess the character.

OVERSOUL: Stress Testing Results

Finally, ALPHA TEST! Yes! It's coming next week! We've reached the top of the hill in terms of buidling some of the key components for the game's engine and now things will be moving a lot faster. I believe Alpha will still be only for upgraded Artix Master Account players but the game will be left up until Beta Test. Beta Test will allow all players to join!

 

Oversoul is the first video game of my own creation, I mean besides the million video games I created in my head starting with my Atari Sytem and then dicovering Arcades at the mall in the 80's ( Remember those? ) I love strategy games and I found a new type of strategy game when I started playing the battle card games. I thought to myself, there should be actual characters visually doing the actions on these cards. I want to see them fighting not just numbers popping up for damage over static images. That's basically how I started building Oversoul!

 

Anyway, it's been an incredible ride. There's been so many challenges but when you're having fun with the process, nothing feels difficult. Though it's taken longer to finish than expected, the learning experience I've gained has been priceless! I love creating this stuff. And to think, I can play a game I want to play created by me. It's truly a childhood dream of mine come to life.

 

I plan to show sneak peeks of some characters you'll be able to possess in the upcoming Alpha. I'll add them here as the days go by. Enjoy!
